Before the World Knew My Name
Newark Skyline | Newark, New Jersey
Before Los Angeles, there was Newark.
Before the next chapter, there were seven years of becoming.
Newark was a city where I found opportunity, experienced growth, and began discovering more of the person and artist I would become.
It is a city with an extraordinary cultural inheritance.
From the jazz of Sarah Vaughan and Wayne Shorter to the revolutionary poetry of Amiri Baraka, Newark has produced voices that challenged, inspired, and transformed American culture.
In this black-and-white photograph, the city’s historic towers rise beneath a sweeping sky.
The architecture speaks to permanence. The clouds suggest movement.
Together, they remind me that we can belong to a place without remaining there forever.
I eventually left Newark for Los Angeles.
But leaving a city doesn’t mean leaving behind everything it gave you.
Sometimes the places that prepare us for our future become the places we return to in our memories.
This is Newark.
And this is part of where my story began.
