Built to Carry Us
Built to Carry Us
Newark, New Jersey
Steel. Strength. Structure. Survival.
The bridges of Newark are monuments to an industrial city built through generations of labor.
They represent movement and connection, but they also invite us to consider the workers whose names rarely appear in the history books.
Black Americans helped build the industrial economy of the North while facing discrimination in employment, housing, and access to opportunity.
Photographed against the darkness, this towering steel structure becomes more than a piece of infrastructure. It becomes a reminder of the weight that communities have carried across generations.
I see something familiar in these structures.
The ability to withstand pressure. To remain standing. To connect one place to another, even when the journey is difficult.
Some of us were built to carry more than anyone should have to.
And somehow, we are still standing.
