The City Still Sings
The City Still Sings
Passaic River | Newark, New Jersey
Some cities have a sound that never leaves you.
Newark is one of them.
The birthplace of musical legends and a home to generations of Black artists, Newark has given the world voices that transformed jazz, gospel, soul, hip-hop, and popular music.
Sarah Vaughan. Whitney Houston. Queen Latifah. Wayne Shorter.
Their music became part of the city’s legacy, carrying Newark far beyond its streets.
In this nighttime photograph, the city lights dance across the Passaic River. The skyline stands quietly in the distance, but the reflections suggest something alive beneath the surface.
I spent seven years in Newark. Seven years growing, creating, and discovering parts of myself.
And although I eventually left, something about the city stayed with me.
Because even in silence, Newark still sings.
